Can you detect Cavitations?

BeamReaders' oral and maxillofacial radiologists have reviewed the radiographic literature and engaged in collegial discussion regarding the conditions listed below. It is our institutional position that these conditions represent clinical diagnoses. Currently, there are insufficient radiographic criteria for identifying these conditions on imaging, and therefore BeamReaders cannot include these terms in our radiographic impressions:

  1. NICO (Neuralgia Inducing Cavitational Osteonecrosis)
  2. CFO (Chronic Fibrosing Osteomyelitis)
  3. CIBD (Chronic Ischemic Jawbone Disease)
  4. FDOJ (Fatty Degenerative Osteonecrosis of the Jaw)

BeamReaders provides radiology reports that evaluate for pathological processes with established radiographic criteria. Upon request, we are also able to comment on altered trabecular pattern. Every case is evaluated for radiographic evidence of pathosis, whether pathosis is suspected or not.

We recognize that research in this area continues to evolve. If you are aware of peer-reviewed, high-level evidence establishing reliable radiographic correlations for any of the above conditions that we may not have encountered, we welcome the opportunity to review it. Our commitment is always to align our practice with the best available evidence in service of your patients. We appreciate the opportunity to serve your practice.
